I really love this new commercial from Goodby, Silverstein & Partners for Sprint. It embodies everything that reminds me of life at an advertising agency. From the nit-picking clients, frazzled designers all the way to the stubborn directors, this is it. My favorite part is how they tell the client that adding pants to the character will cost them an extra million dollars… classic!

The credits sheet on this one is HUGE, so rather than talk about each individual in paragraph format, I’m going to opt for a list at the end of this post. Some people to pull out though are probably the most obvious. The Farrelly Brothers are perfect in this mini-glimpse into the daily lives of Hollywood + Advertising production teams. Rus Chaeo and Kevin Koller were the Copywriter/AD team for this piece, so I have to call attention to their role in this spot along with the folks from Semerad for their work on the animated Happy The HedgeHog. Great work guys!

It seems like they were going over the top in an effort to be funny, however this is one of the worst commercials I can remember watching in a LOOOOOONG time. Sorry for the bad review, but I meant it when I said that this spot was disturbing. I’m not going to get into the credits for this one other than it was somehow allowed to leave the hallways of Crispin Porter + Bogusky. And why is that? Similar to their mac-clenching Microsoft team, this one probably prefers Papa Johns.

Yvonne Chia and Jamie Overkamp were the Copywriter/Art Director team for this piece along with Will St. Clair as the Executive Producer (Kevin James was also a Producer). It was directed by Johannes Gamble from Superstudio (”super!”) with Ty Evans as the DP. Nathan de la Rionda and Dana Garman were the Producer/Executive Producer combo on this project. It was shot entirely in Van Nuys, CA.

Johannes Gamble also was the Editor/VFX Supervisor for this piece. Apparently he’s either a credit hog or he’s really just that multi-talented (he’s also listed as the Sound Designer on this one).

Here’s an ad for Smith & Nephew’s replacement implants that will leave you wanting to go do something “extreme” like change the channel. The voice-over is pretty bad for this one as they’re desperately trying to reach what I’m guessing is a younger crowd, but am still unclear which generation they’re referring to as it’s pretty vague. Ogilvy, NY was the agency responsible for this campaign.

Here are a few gems taken from the ad:

A generation of doers

Each made to endure, like the adventurous spirit of our generation..

Engineered to meet the needs of your high performance life.

Horrible copy… great animation though. It’s really the only reason why i’m posting this, the visual effects are absolutely killer.

Eben Mears and Mate from Psyop directed this piece with Michael Neithardt and Lucia Grillo as the Producer/Executive Producer (Tarun Cahraipotra was the Assistant Producer). The CG artists were Alvin Bae, Jan Bitz, Jae Ham, Miguel Salek, Jeff Dates, Rich Magan, Jacob Slutsky, Jason Vega, Goo-Shun Wang and Lee Wolland. Ben Chan was the Storyboard Artist (Andreas Gebhardt was the Software Developer). After Effects were done by Doug Purver, Jason Conradt and Elliot Blanchard. Sound Design was by Q Department.

Here’s a cool new spot for Nestle owned Jamba Juice by Publicis NY and Stardust Studios. Something interesting about this project was the way in which they animated the figure on the swing-set. It was all taken from a motion-capture shoot over at Santa Monica-based Perspective Studios where they had a live model performing the swimming, swinging and other actions that you see in the finished spot.

from Brad Tucker, Creative Director for Stardust Studios:

“The data from that shoot was then imported straight into Maya,” Tucker explained. “From there, we applied the data to the 3D models to create the motions you see the characters performing….”

The song used this :30 commercial was Fruit Machine by The Ting Tings.

Jeremy Filgate and Liem Nguyen were the Copywriter/Art Director team from Publicis NY with Anthony Garretti as their Executive Producer (Simeon Roane was the CD).

Brad Tucker from Stardust Studios directed this 3D fruitopia along with Paul Abatemarco as Executive Producer (Josh Libitsky was Line Producer). Jonathan Wu was the Art Director for Stardust, working with 3D artists Joseph Andrade, James Anderson and Chris Eckardt. Andrew Ashton was the VFX Supervisor/Compositer for this project.

Motion Capture for this spot was by Perspective Studios, Santa Monica and featured Eric Warzecha as the Audio Mixer from Sound Lounge. Here’s an update on the Mercenaries 2 commercial that I talked about last week on this site. Apparently the people in charge over at DraftFCB have been watching you guys and liked the response that they’ve been seeing over the music used in the spot.

Here’s an update on the Mercenaries 2 commercial that I talked about last week on this site. Apparently the people in charge over at DraftFCB have been watching you guys and liked the response that they’ve been seeing over the music used in the spot.

They recently went back to the Wojahn Brothers in Los Angeles (the folks who created the original music score) and had them create a full length version of the song, which is now available for free download on the recently added download section of the game’s website. Or you can click on the direct link to the song here:
Mercenaries 2 - Oh No (Full Length).mp3

Also included is a ‘making-of’ video (found above), showing what went into the production of the commercial thanks to the team over at Shilo.

Fancy that, an agency that is pro-activly responding to consumer feedback! Nice work.

A big ‘tip of the hat’ goes out to Colin McRae + Isaac Clemens from DraftFCB for the update.

Not far behind last weeks Mercenaries 2 spot comes the new trailer for Sony Playstation’s first person shooter Resistance 2.

Not much to comment on this trailer other than “amazing!” It’s a video game about an alternate world history. Don’t worry, eventually everyone will be counting on you to save the world from evil…that’s for certain.

The folks from Playstation had this to say about the spot:

The brief was to create a promo outlining key moments in our ‘twisted’ history of the Resistance universe. Where most first-person shooters are based in either a Sci-fi or World War II context, Resistance blends the two with a story set in an alternative version of the 20th Century. In this reality WWII never happened and there was no Nazi enemy. Instead, humanity is threatened by brutal invaders, the Chimera. And the situation is looking desperate… [source]

The transitions in this movie are absolutely stunning!

Here’s the latest commercial for the upcoming Mercenaries 2 video game. The music selection is uniquely awesome. We’re so use to seeing combat games being dressed up with special effects and a dark soundtrack that this one immediately stands out….High School Musical style. Also, THIS IS THE DIRECTORS CUT! Enjoy! (Original “on-air” version is posted below)

Draft/FCB, San Francisco was the agency responsible for this spot with Dan Watson as the Senior Broadcast Producer.

The folks over at Shilo directed this spot with co-founder Jose Gomez as Creative Director. Gomez, along with Curtis Doss, was also Lead Designer. Nate Davies, Eugene Gauran Ed Laag, Jon Lorenz and Curtis were the 2D Animators. Tamir Sapir, Cody Smith, Blake Guest and George Longo did all the 3D Modeling. Blake Guest, Trentity DeWitt, Nate Davies and George Longo also did all the 3D Animation. Kiel Figgins, Blake Guest, Jorma Auburn and Bren Wilson did the Character Animation.

Santino Sladavic and Jake Hibler were the Executive Producer/Producer team for this piece with Dara Norris as the Sound Producer for Wojahn Bros Music. Scott and Rojer Wojahn were the composers for the on-air version of this cheery-yet-badass soundtrack. You may have noticed that the music used in the directors cut is different from what was used in the “on-air” version, it’s because the directors cut audio was created by a team from Beacon Street Studios. Special arrangements for that song’s use were made between Shilo and Beacon Street for that release.

Here’s the version that made it to broadcast -

For Draft/FCB, Colin McRae is the ACD/CW along with ACD/AD Tony Vazquez. The Executive Creative Director at Draft/FCB is Matt Reinhard.

Ok, when I first saw this my initial reaction was to wonder who in their right mind would use characters from Adult Swim’s Squidbillies show to represent their products. After the second time watching though I realized it’s just a cheap knockoff…not an authentic Adult Swim endorsement. I will point out that it does manage to give off the same weird-but-unsettling feeling that the show does. If that’s what you were going for guys, kudos.

Created by Ogilvy Group UK for Coca-Cola owned soda brand Fanta, this animated :30 shows us a security guard squid whose days of toying with what could be either school kids or prison inmates comes to an end. I couldn’t help noticing that the basketball court that our hero is playing on resembled a prison yard in that there are cameras everywhere, they’re all wearing black and white and it’s completely fenced in. Is this spot trying to target the youth demographic or the fresh-out-of-juvenile-hall market?

Kate Paull and Stuart Pantoll were the Creatives for this piece with Kim Parrett as the Agency Producer. Tokyoplastic was once again the Director for Picasso Pictures, London (with Jane Bolton as the Producer). Tokyoplastic was also the production company used for the animation in this commercial. Sound Design was by James Saunders at Jungle with music from Plan 8 at Hear no Evil.
