This is one videoclip that must have been pulled from the deep back corners of the archives: It’s Kentucky Fried Chickens celebrity spokesman, founder & social icon Colonel Harland Sanders as the weekly guest on the popular CBS game show What’s My Line? (circa 1964). People talk a lot these days about “You are now the brand” or about “Brands coming to life,” well here’s an example of one company that made their brand come to life in the everyday life of its’ founder…RIP my dear old southern friend.

I came across this Infographic about Infographics (created by Phil Gyford) the other day and couldn’t help but share it. It’s so true that’s it’s actually pretty funny. Infographics seem to be the latest trend these days for displaying data of any sort, even being seen used as a creative new way to show-off resumes! The only problem is some people are going a little over-board either thinking they have to show the data in this format to remain ‘edgy’ or are having to comply with the request of others to ditch more contemporary styles of data presentation for “something that looks cool.”

You’ll see infographics used a lot when people release “Social Media Reports” or data on whatever the latest trends are. Sometimes it’s like they’re just going through their chart/graph options and including one of each using the same data. Phil best described it here:

That same figure as a pie chart which makes this look more complicated.

Come on guys, the whole point of using creative formats like this to display data is to help the reader better digest the information, not just show them something pretty. Planners, while you might be pretty good with your charting tools, don’t forget that there’s a whole team of art directors just around the corner who create ‘pretty’ graphics all day long and would love to cut out the middle-man (aka how creative dept.’s see account planning). The message derived from all your research and analysis are what you need to get across first and foremost, not just another pdf full of eye candy!

Well it’s official, now all you mac fanboys can all rejoice in glee with the release of the first round of public spots promoting the new Apple iPad. I was kinda hoping for something on par with some of the previous campaigns associated with new Apple gear, but I’ll just chalk this one up as a media-buy filler while they work on something a little more fitting coming from the infamous Media Arts Lab. Continuing with their tradition of featuring either some classic rock legend or a snippet from one of the latest new indie groups that will surely make a killing from getting the ‘apple bump,’ you can hear a sample of “There Goes My Love” by Danish rock band The Blue Vans.

Well it should be no shock to any of you who regularly read this blog that I’m somewhat a music dork and well, on about the third time watching this commercial found that if you pause the clip at just the right moments you can get a good glimpse at what the albums loaded up on iTunes are. They include Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix by The Phoenix, July Flame by Laura Veirs and one of my favorites – Cease To Begin by the Band of Horses. If you haven’t heard of either of those artists and/or albums before, I’d strongly suggest you go seek them out on iTunes, Grooveshark, Lala, Audiolizer, Spotify, Last.fm, The Hype Machine or whatever other service you’re currently hooked on that provides you with the tunes you need to make it through the day. Currently i’m semi-obsessed with thesixtyone.com, it’s been introducing me to so many incredibly talented musicians who aren’t what you’d call “mainstream artists.” That being said if i’m looking for an old commercial favorite I tend to gravitate towards lala, it’s yet to disappoint even the most random song searches.
